MIT Program Questions & Answers

Medical Interpreter Training

Welcome to Language Link, CM AHEC's innovative Medical Interpreter Training Program (MIT).

Listed below are common questions asked by students. Click on the question to view the answers.

- How can I register for the course?

You may register in any of two ways. You can print our MIT Registration Form, fill it out manually, then fax or mail it to Language Link, or you may register online.

- Is there a registration deadline?

Yes, Registration deadline will be 2 weeks prior to Orientation Day. Please refer to the Online Bulletin service on our website for information on class dates.

- What is the Orientation Day?

Orientation Day is the day in which students will be tested for entry into the MIT program. If you fail the exam you will not be allowed to take the course. Students will also have the opportuntity to complete any pending registration they may have.

- Will students be tested and what kind of test will it be?

Yes, students will have a Language Assessment Test on Orientation Day. The test will compose of Medical Terminology and Anatomy. The Language Assessment Test has two components, a written and oral component.

(Language Link is not providing additional information on the Language Assessment Test. Language Link advises all interested participants to study Medical Terminology & Anatomy.)

- What are some of the prerequisites for the MIT course?

  • You need to be 18 years of age or older.
  • Have a High School diploma or GED
  • Be fluently bilingual (able to speak, read and write in English and in the target language you speak.
  • Be employed by a medical, clinical or human service organization that provides services to MassHealth members. (e.g., hospital, health center, nursing home, assisted living facility, etc.)
  • Successfully pass the language assessment component and entrance interview. The test includes an evaluation of both written and oral proficiency in English and the target language.

- How much does it cost to take the MIT course?

If you are able to meet the prerequisites, the cost of the MIT course is $100.00.

- When and where will the course be held?

Please refer to our Online Bulletin for up-to-date information. If you have already filled our Online MIT Registration Form you will be notified by courier mail, or by email.

- How long does the course last?

The MIT course is held for 20 weeks; class meets one night a week for 3 hours. Total accumulation of hours included in the MIT Program is 60.

- Are refunds available?

All fees paid except the registration fee of $25.00 will be refunded to participants in the event he/she is NOT accepted into the program.

- Will I need to buy books for the course?

No, class materials will be provided by CM AHEC / Language Link.

- Will dinner be provided for students on class days?

Yes, all students will be provided with a meal during class break. Students are given a 15 minute break half way thru class.

- Will I get a certificate?

Yes, upon successfully completing the requirements for certification students will receive a Medical Interpreter Certificate from Language Link.

- What are the requirements for Certification?

You must attend all classes; students are allowed (1) absence only. You must pass the final exam with a grade of 85 or greater.

- What kind of certificate will I get?

You will get a Language Link Certificate. Language Link is affiliated with UMass Medical School and Central Mass AHEC.

- Will make-up sessions be available for missed classes?

No, participants who miss more than one class WILL NOT receive a Certificate of Completion.

- Does Language Link provide job placement after graduation?

No, Language Link does not currently provide this service. However, Language Link can provide the student with information on who to contact in the event they may be interested in employment.

- Are additional trainings or workshops available?

Yes, workshops are often available for continuing education in the field. Please refer to the Online Bulletin for workshops that may be held by Language Link or any of its affiliates.
